Our Story

The Korean American Nurses Association of Southern California (KANASC) was founded by forty Korean immigrant nurses in 1969. At the time, many nurses came from Korea, but there was no organized way of networking and sharing information about being a nurse in the U.S. As a result, they founded KANASC to help and support each other, as well as other immigrant nurses.

Since 1971, an RN review course was offered through KANASC. After completing this course, about 3,000 new immigrant nurses were able to successfully obtain an RN license and practice as professional nurses in the U.S. In addition, KANASC has provided annual scholarships to support nursing students, offered continuing education for nurses, coordinated health fairs and other resources for local communities, assisted in arrangement of heart surgeries for children with heart problems, and much more.
 
With the strength of our long immigrant history, we will continue to pass down our mission from generation to generation through activities that promote networking, leadership development, professional growth, and community service. We invite you to join us as we strive to improve and advance the future of KANASC and all our members.

남가주 한인 간호사협회는 1960년대 말 간호사 이민이 대거 시작되면서 이민 정착에 필요한 정보를 나누고 도움도 받을수있는 기관이 절실히 요구되어 1969년에 한인 이민 간호사 40여명에 의하여 창설되었습니다.
 
그 후 한인 간호사들의 미국 RN 면허증 취득을 돕기위하여 시험 준비반을 1973년에 개설하여 그동안 약 3000여명의 간호사들이 이 과정을 거쳐 RN 시험에 합격하여 전문 간호사로서 활동하는데 큰 공헌을 하였습니다. 그외에도 장학사업, 심장병 어린이 수술 돕기,지역사회 봉사와 건강 증진사업등을 계속해왔습니다.
 
간호사 이민역사와 더불어 이제는 협회의 사업이 차세대로 이어지고 세대간의 네트웍을 통하여 활발한 정보교류를 하며 리더십을 키워 미 주류사회에서 우리의 권익을 더욱 더 향상시키고 타 지역사회와 함께 건전한 사회를 발전시키기 위하여 꾸준히 노력해 나갈 것입니다.
